... School is over for another year! WOW!
I now watch with interest what my 'first class at Cloverlea' achieve next year as the class is divided into three classes!
On the last Thursday, Room 2 held their own prize giving to celebrate the learning for those students who should be recognised in making substantial leaps in their learning. It wasn't a difficult decision to award those students at the official prize giving because results are recorded throughout the year along with student progress.
Well done to Jared F. and Star for taking out the Year 4 Academic Award and the following students who received the Endeavour Award: Jared J, Tyler and Jorja.
For adhering to the Cloverlea 4C's could have gone to a number of students but we could only choose one and that went to Leah.
On Friday we had a fun afternoon with a heap of activities. We played a shark game with the big parachute. I don't think I've heard so many children laughing and screaming! It was hillarious! Another game we played was Mrs Clark's favourite! You were in teams and you had to run to get a lolly, eat it, eat a dry weetbix and then blow up a balloon and pop it! Enjoy the slide show!
I wish you all a wonderful break and I do hope that some of you are remembering to keep writing and practising your timetables. You don't want to lose what you have learnt otherwise you will need to work extra hard to catch up at the start of the school year.
Be safe and we will see you in 2013!
Feliz navidad!

Gala Time!
What an impressive effort making 50 bags of hokey pokey and 178 gourmet toffee apples. The apples turned out perfectly with a huge selection: Jaffa, hokey pokey, sprinkles, orero, marshmellow, winegums, chocolate and plain toffee apples with a squeeze of hardening chocolate topping. SCRUMPTIOUS! All packaged up and ready for tonights School Gala. At $2 each we know we will sell them as the other teachers are quickly snapping them up before we have put them on the table! Maybe next year we will have to put the price up!

Thanksgiving
Mrs Clark’s pumpkin pie recipe.
Room 2 have been learning about Thanksgiving as a type of
celebration in Canada and the USA. We
learnt that Thanksgiving is about giving thanks to the Cherokee Indians who
helped the pilgrims when they first arrived to New England. The Indians also gave thanks to the pilgrims
for bringing new food and together they celebrated with family during the time
of harvest. The traditional food are
turkey and pumpkin pie. Guess
what?! We got to eat pumpkin pie that
Mrs Clark made! It was yummy although we
were a little unsure to think we were eating pumpkin in a dessert! Here is the recipe:
Ingredients:
Several sheets of short crust pastry
1 medium pumpkin peeled and
diced.
120g castor sugar
½ tsp ground mixed spice
½ tsp ground cinnamon
½ tsp of ginger
3 eggs
Cream for serving.
Instructions.
1.
Preheat oven to 180 ͦC
2.
Roll out pastry and cut into circles and place
in muffin tray, put baking paper over the top and bake for 8 minutes.
3.
Boil the pumpkin until cooked, drain and puree.
4.
Add pumpkin into bowl with ingredients except
the cream.
5.
Spoon mixture onto pastry and cook for 30
minutes.
6.
Serve with whipped cream.

Week 2-3
On Friday, Cloverlea School had the amazing opportunity to view the performance from Feilding Intermediate. We listened to a choir, a band, Kapa Haka, dances, Wearable Arts and a solo singing performance. The variety of performers was inspirational! Look at some of the photos Leah took:
Some of us posing with the Barn Owl from the wearable arts showcase. Mrs Clark's son was the owl.

Term 4 week 1
What unsettling weather over the school holidays BUT we all returned all in one piece ready for a week of assessment! This term is a short term with activities organised through sporting organisations, visits from other schools, athletics, the school gala, fun day and then of course the move into the hall for rooms one and two! At this stage we are looking at moving in week four for approximately three weeks. There will be minimal disruption as we will be organised well before the move and Mrs Burnett and I have an exciting programme planned for our time in the hall.
This term we have begun our journey about being 'essentially fit' and we will be learning about 'Celebrations' as part of our inquiry. This follows on from our Olympic Country inquiry! If anyone has/is growing pumpkins at home and they can spare a pumpkin or two please let me know as we will be involved in a certain celebration held on the fourth Thursday in November and it involves a certain pumpkin delicacy! I wonder what that celebration could be and in what country did it originate from?
Have a lovely long weekend and a short week in week two!
Hasta luego

Last week of term
Well done to the students who attended the inter-school sports on Tuesday. We achieved fantastic results against much bigger schools! A lovely day was spent in the sun!
Term three has now drawn to a close and Room 2 have been very busy!
As you read this posting, term four planning is already underway and it is looking like another exciting term full of new opportunities and experiences! Mrs C is going to be kept very busy in the first week putting up our amazing Taniwha artwork on display and then off on a nice holiday in the Coromandel! We look forward hearing about what you get up to in the holidays! Try and discover something new that you can share!
Have a well deserved break, Room 2! Keep safe and we look forward to seeing your smiley faces at the start of Term 4. Don't forget your sunhats!

Week 9
Another action filled week has been and gone. We have completed our work for the Digi Awards! It was an amazing experience for all of us and we know for next time to get onto the project straight away and be more proactive rather than relying on adults.
Room 2 have been doing gymnastics on a Wednesday afternoon. We are performing floor, box and beam routines. It was amazing seeing the confidence grow in such a short time. Ka rawe!
We have soccer training for the Year 4 and 5 girls on Monday (tomorrow) and we have super sports tournament training throughout this week which will be held in week 11 at various venues around Palmerston North. Well done to those Year 5 and 6 students who made it into a team. A number of students tried out and the teachers can only have a specific number of students playing so please do not feel disheartened if you did not make it into a team. If you are a Year 5 you will always have another chance next year!
Summer soccer, cricket and touch rugby teams are also starting soon and this may involve training after school. Listen to the notices carefully and if you get a permission slip to return to school with registration money, make sure you hand it in on time because some children missed out on playing touch rugby because their forms were in too late.
We are finishing off our narrative writing which we cannot wait to share with you and we have some exciting art pieces to work on for the rest of the term. We are working really hard in numeracy with applying our knowledge and developing sound strategies through very challenging activities. Students are completing some very unique ICT pieces of work which will soon be on display later this week.
Next term, we will be having our school Gala. Room 2 is after small glass jars with lids. The jars can be as small as baby food jars (they would be the perfect size). If you know of anyone who has a baby please ask them if they could give you the empty jars.
Have a great second last week to term!

Week 8
What a week! We have been working on our inquiry theme 'Olympic Countries' and of course the Digi Awards.
How impressive are the students in Room 2 with their country projects! Thirty out of 31 students presented a project on a country competing in the 2012 Olympic games and what a mix we had. Although we had a number of Jamaican countries we also had countries such as Finland, Kenya, Mexico, Brazil, Italy, France, China, Japan, U.S.A, Canada, South Africa, Egypt, Sweden, Greece, England and Ireland!
The goal was for the students to research the main ideas we discussed in class; population, flag, similarities and differences, Olympic medal tally, famous people, money, and other interesting facts. We had to put our own ideas into our own words and present the project in a unique way. This forced us to think outside a decahedron (a shape with 10 faces). This meant that we COULD present our project in a poster form but we were encouraged to think of other ways in which we could make our project presentation have the WOW factor. As it turned out, we had a pyramid, paper mache coconut tree, statues and a Leaning Tower of Pisa. We also had a giant sized passport, suitcase and a chocolate brownie cake with a flag on it! WOW!
You can view the slideshow of ALL the projects (thank you photographer Lyon)! You can put your mouse pointer on the project to zoom in. ENJOY! (We will be displaying these projects for a long time in class in the hall and at team sharing. We will be referring back to these projects for the rest of the year as we have a few exciting activities planned as this was not a one off activity).
On Thursday, we also had the pleasure of having three Japanese students visit our classroom. We learnt how to write in Japanese calligraphy and of course, origami. Three groups made different paper creations. I think the most impressive were the paper aeroplanes that could REALLY fly! I was impressed at how the students followed instructions in making their origami swans! We are very lucky to be given opportunities like this and we look forward to another visit soon.
We also say 'adios' to Shania who leaves our school this week for new and exciting adventures up north. Good luck!

Week 6 and 7
The big topic for these two weeks was Cybersafety and we were taken into the world of Hectors World where the characters were faced with all sorts of scenarios where people were trying to get their personal information in the 'on-line world'. It made Room 2 to STOP and THINK when entering any personal data on the internet. We learnt to create usernames and passwords when logging into games and if we were ever unsure we have to ask an adult.
Hectors World link has been added to our blog as a reminder!

Week 5
Here we are, almost half way through term three and what a busy learning time we are all having.
I have set up Study Ladder for Room 2 numeracy (maths class). There are set tasks to complete in the areas we are covering in class. Make the most of this resource and you must tell me if you have lost your password or you suspect someone may be using your details.
Here is the link (copy and paste it into the address bar or click the button on the right hand side of the screen:
www.studyladder.co.nz
We will be spending a lot of time working on Cyber Safety! The computer world is not a safe place so this will be our focus for the next six weeks so this should make interesting discussion.
We had a fantastic finish to the school Olympics! The photos with the medals won can be displayed in the school foyer. Yes, Australia did take away the Gold for Sportsmanship and Behaviour!
The literacy groups have been busy with mini inquiries where groups of readers have wanted to know more about a particular reading. Here is an example of bats! The students even completed a venn diagram showing the differences and similarities between bats and hummingbirds.

Week 4 - Olympic Games Week
What an exciting event! Cloverlea School held their own Olympic opening ceremony! We followed the actual layout of the real Olympic games and we even had the (pretend) Queen and James Bond 007 who declared the games open!
LET THE GAMES BEGIN!
We have a fantastic variety of Olympic games organised - archery, equestrian, swimming, basketball ... the list goes on!
Enjoy viewing the photos of our opening ceremony ...
It was also a fantastic turnout of parents/whanau!

Week 3
Another very busy week passes us by! We have completed our personification artwork which has brightened up our room. Room 2 has been learning to play volleyball and all of us can serve and some of us are even spiking the ball! It certainly pays to watch what the other team are doing!
Writing of sport, we will be organising a 'Teachers versus Year 6 Netball A Grade' game in week 7! The game will be played during a lunchtime and I think the teachers may need to have a practice!
We have settled into classroom routines really well. For narrative writing and our mini inquiry units during literacy time, we are learning how to give constructive feedback on our peers work. We are learning how to edit our work so when we write more we will know how to give our writing impact. We have learnt how to use adjectives, interjections (action sounds) and punctuation effectively and how it can change simple sentences to something really powerful! We need to remember to proof read our work to make sure our writing makes sense.
On Friday we even had the opportunity to make butter. Some of us drank the buttermilk and then we spread the butter onto bread and ate it!
Well done to Leah who received Student of the Week for consistently displaying good work habits and always trying her best. Leah has a real 'can do' attitude!
The Super Kids could have gone to a number of sensational students this week but they went to Thomas for awesome stage work in numeracy (maths), 100% at Stage 4 and 98% at Stage 5 in number knowledge. Walter received a certificate for being a positive role model in class and fantastic progress in all learning areas.
Next week will be another busy week as we begin our Olympic games! the opening ceremony will be Tuesday afternoon. The closing ceremony will be next Tuesday. Time to be advised. Do pop down and support the kids and if you see me, make sure you say 'hi' to me! I'll be the lady with the green wig wearing a cork hat standing with the winning team - "Ozzi, Ozzi, Ozzi ... OI, OI, OI!"
Have a lovely weekend!

Week 2
WOW! Our school days are flying by! Room 2 are very busy with narrative writing particularly with adding adjectives and interjections! We are learning to edit our writing by improving our stories. We are applying many reading strategies during literacy time and some reading groups are starting to carry out complex tasks for example, mini inquiries and learning to research for more information.
Our sport started this week with volleyball being the first focus. We are hoping to hold a volleyball competition with other classes but we need to improve our skills first! Today, we had the wonderful opportunity to have two Japanese ladies join our class for an hour today. We saw our names written in Japanese and we welcomed them in our volleyball tournament.
This Thursday, electives began. The children chose out of the following activities under the performing arts umbrella: creative art, glockenspeil, ukulele, kapa haka, gymnastics and Spanish. What a fantastic opportunity to try new things!
Well done to Rebekah and Arrus for being the SuperKids last week and Ryan and Shayla-Lee this week. Last week student of the week went to Arrus and this week it went to Leah.
One of the types of assessment Room 2 are using is the Bullseye. You should be familiar with this in the homework book already. When the children achieve 10 bullseyes in one book, they receive a prize from Senorita Clark's special prize tin! We also have group points and this week, the Epic Warriors won with the most points!
We have completed spelling and numeracy assessment this week. The students know where they are at and what they need to do to move onto the next stage/level. With spelling, the students will be working on the words they got incorrect in their spelling assessment which is based off a programme called "Spelling for Success" which gives the children their spelling age which can be compared to their chronological age (current age). Spelling will also come from the children's story writing.
The Basic Facts ladder is up and running with the children's names next to the level that they are at. Get your child to explain how this works when you pop into the classroom.
We are using a lot of ICT in the classroom. The programmes we are using can be accessed on our blog page and are safe. Please talk to your child about using the internet safely. Digi Awards have started so our classroom is a real hive of activity! If there are any Room 2 parent/s out there who are creative with photography or with movie making software, please do get in touch with me (even write a note in your child's homework book). Many hands will make light work and the children are highly motivated with this activity. It is the expectation that all of the students will submit a piece of work in the Digi Awards. Some people are working in groups of 2 or 3 and some people have chosen to work individually.
The children have had a fantastic week of learning and we have another exciting week organised starting with a performance in the hall on Monday morning by a visitor to the school. More about that in another post!
Have a lovely weekend.

Room 2's ice skating recounts
Guess what? Yesterday morning at 9.20am it was ice skating time and it was awesome! Room 2, 1, 5 and 6 all went ice skating. I really enjoyed skating. Once lots of people had been on the rink the ice got carved up so a little bit of the track so a little bit of the track was not so good.
I chose size 2 skates. They were comfy and warm! When I first went on the track I saw lumps on the track it made it slippery. When you went over the lumps I fell over a few times but I was okay! Just a bit of ice on me. There were so many people it was ACTION!
It was really exciting going with the other classes. I had a great time.

I had so much fun yesterday. Four classes from my school
went ice skating.
We went to the square, it was classes 1,2,5,& 6.
I fell over on the ice. The ice was cold and slippery. It
was a lot of fun. I had such a great time and I can’t wait to do it again.
There were a lot of people at the Ice skating rink.
I saw a few people from my class fall over. I fell over
about five times.

Updates from Week 1
Hola! Wow the children are well and truly into the classroom routine although some are still struggling returning their homework books. They must be returned everyday so the children can complete spelling activities.
Tomorrow morning I will be testing the children on their spelling and basic facts (along with editing and general knowledge skills).
This week the students took home a reading journal. These need to be returned to school everyday. We did not get to do reading today due to ice skating.
Starting tomorrow, we have library every Friday morning and sport/PE skills in the afternoon. This term our focus will be on ball skills relating to the Olympic games. The students are fortunate that I play so many types of sport! If your child cannot participate in sport please do let me know! We will also have gymnastics coming up later this term so if your child has had a previous/existing injury please do let me know.
Assembly is tomorrow at 2.30pm.

Welcome to Room 2, Term 3, 2012
Wow! Here I am on day two in Room 2, with a fantastic, vibrant class full of talented learners. The students need to be commended for their diligence and perseverance of the new systems in place and the high expectations already fostered. We have got a fantastic reading rotation in place so I will be spending the next few days ensuring that I have listened to the students reading to me so we can work on individual reading strategies. We are working on a piece of writing which we will be edited and re-edited to become a marvellous piece of material that will not make Senorita Clark fall asleep when she reads the final story! Watch this space as the students publish their stories here! On Monday we sat a numeracy assessment and Mrs B from Room 1 and I have placed the students to where they are best fitted between the two classes. (Cross grouping starts tomorrow [Wednesday]). Students will be moved around, either between the two classes and across numeracy groups as we move into different numeracy areas. I encourage you to get your child to use the links under 'literacy' as I have now installed a link to a fantastic reading resource where stories can be read aloud! This helps with tracking the text and listening to the fluency of the reader! There is also 'mystorymaker' which is a great writing tool. Of course, the boys do tend to get a bit carried away with typical action hero antics and I couldn't quite figure out how a pirate ship ended up in the middle of the forest in one story published in class today!
Please do pop in to say hello as it is important to develop a good school/class/home partnership. I am not available on Thursday afternoons.
I will also take the opportunity to use this site for reminders eccetra so do pop back and check on updates! What better way to get our classroom into your homes!
Encantada!
